A Real Plan for Reducing Automobile and Homeowner Insurance. Both businesses and citizens are leaving Detroit at an alarming rate. Many are leaving to escape the City's rising tax rates and high homeowner and auto insurance. Detroit's survival will substantially hinge upon the new mayor's ability to retain existing residents and businesses, while attracting new ones. Key aspects of my (JERROLL Sanders') plan are designed to do just that. I intend to implement an incremental tax roll back plan while working to reduce auto and homeowner insurance rates in the City of Detroit (redlining). I will also work with legislators to abolish laws such as the Driver Responsibility Act (DRA) that have a disproportionately negative affect on Detroit residents. Here is how I plan to roll back taxes and reduce insurance rates:
Incremental Tax Rollback. My incremental tax rollback plan has a five-part objective: 1) Attract new residents and businesses to Detroit, thereby increasing total tax revenue, 2) Retain existing residents and businesses in Detroit, 3) Roll back taxes over a 3-5 years period, 4) Incrementally reduce the estimated $300 million deficit, and 5) Create a rainy day fund. My tax rollback plan involves issuing citizens a tax credit based upon prior year tax revenue.
Plan for Reducing Auto & Homeowners Insurance.
At Governor Granholm's direction, Butch Hollowell is
working to reduce the rates insurance companies are charging Detroit
residents for auto and homeowners insurance. Hollowell's plan focuses on
affordability and
seeks to
bring Detroit insurance rates into line with
rates in other major cities. If Hollowell succeeds, Detroiters will see
some reduction in insurance rates but will likely continue paying
substantially more than their suburban counterparts. As Mayor of Detroit, I (JERROLL
Sanders)
will work with Michigan's congressional representatives, as well as mayors across the country to implement federal legislation
requiring One Rate for The State.
